Hip, Hip, Hoo-RAVE-O!

On October 11th and 12th, the MLLC hosted an open training for the RAVE-O intervention program. The training was well attended by reading specialists, literacy coaches, special education teachers, and speech/language pathologists from Carver, Nauset, Norwell and Mansfield.

The 2-day training was led by Elaine Seavey and was well-recieved by all. Teachers learned more about the intensive research behind RAVE-O and some proven instructional strategies. Ms. Seavey led the trainees through the program step-by-step and answered some critical questions reagarding implementation and assigning students.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Eleni Steadman of the HILL for Literacy will facilitate session 2 of the Literacy Assessment Course on Thursday, October 20th from 8:00 - 12:00. Member districts are invited to send one team member to observe the course.

The next meeting of the South Shore Coaches/RTI Coordinators group will be on October 28th. Our "hot-topic" for discussion this month will be Students' Response to Data and Interventions - a great follow-up to the RAVE-O presentation

In the afternoon, the MLLC will host superintendents and district literacy leaders from Avon, Abington, East Bridgewater, Rockland, and Carver. Using a case study model, the Carver Team will facilitate analysis of grade 3 data from 2005 to present. The group will review data from several sources: MCAS, DIBELS, GRADE, and the Benchmark Writing Prompt to highlight student achievement, areas of strength and need, as well as correlations for predicting future student success. The HILL for Literacy will contribute in person and online.

Rave Reviews for RAVE-O!

On September 30, 2011 the Makepeace Literacy Leadership Center hosted a presentation of the RAVE-O program by George Logue, President of Sopris/Cambium and Stephanie Gottwald, Research Coordinator for Tufts University's Center for Reading and Language Research.

Attendees were impressed by the research and development behind this innovative new tool for reading intervention!

So, what does RAVE-O stand for anyway? Retrieval, Automaticity, Vocabulary, Engagement with Language, Orthography. This research-based program teaches and reinforces retrieval at the word and meaning level, developing automaticity of basic decodable core words with multiple meanings, and addresses orthography! The program was designed as an intervention tool for use with students one-on-one and/or small groups in grades 2-5, but can be used at the mid point in grade 1. The highy engaging curriculum incorporates systematic and simultaneous, direct, explicit instruction of reading at the word level, text level, and with multiple linguistic components. Lessons were designed around carefully selected core words that then serve as a pivot for learning multiple aspects of linguistic knowledge.

Carver Public Schools and the Makepeace Literacy Leadership Center invite partner districts to cost-share training for RAVE-O on Tuesday, October 11th, and Wednesday, October 12th, 2011. The training will be held at our facility located at 3 Carver Square Blvd., Carver, MA from 8:30 - 3:30. For questions or to make reservations please contact Michelle Taylor at 508-866-6222 or taylorm@carver .org ( email is preferred!).

Hope to see you there!

Fall Greetings!

The school year is here, the school year is here! The Carver Public Schools is pleased to announce that the Makepeace Literacy Leadership Center is "Growing Strong" with 17 local member districts!

Our next Literacy Coaches & RTI Coordinators Group meeting is Friday, September 30th at the Makepeace Literacy Leadership Center in Carver, MA. We will be joined by Eleni Steadman of The HILL for Literacy, as well as representatives for the RAVE-O intervention program developed by Maryanne Wolf, Ed.D. of Tufts University! "RAVE-O is a one-of-a-kind, small-group reading intervention that targets serious reading challenges. It’s unique, cutting-edge approach balances science and motivation to accelerate learning, closes and prevents the achievement gap, and promotes fluency, comprehension, and deep reading. (Sopris Online)"

Our "Hot Topic" discussion at this month's meeting will focus on Responding to Data.

See you soon!
